NSF
Sponsored Workshop "Cyber-Enabled Discoveries and Innovations" Initiative
Date:
Saturday, June 14, 2008 Time: 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Location:
The Westin Seattle hotel Grand I 1900 5th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98101
Overview The
workshop will consist of 3 invited talks, a presentation by an NSF CDI director,
a breakout discussion session, and an NSF question-and-answer session. The invited
speakers will be outside of traditional dynamic and control disciplines to spark
multi-disciplinary interaction and collaboration (see workshop agenda for more
details). For the discussion session, the workshop participants will break out
into two groups to identify critical areas and issues relative to the CDI initiative,
and then reconvene to give an oral report to all. Lastly, there will be a question-and-answer
session with the NSF directors involved with CDI. Continental
breakfast and lunch will be provided. Also, the workshop will partially reimburse
the participants for their travel expenses. Since the budget is limited, the number
of participants is limited to 40. Among the 40 participants, 15 seats are reserved
for post-doctoral fellows and graduate students. Underrepresented minority researchers
are especially encouraged to register. There is no registration fee to attend
the workshop. To
register, please download the registration form from
the ACC 2008 webpage. Please email the registration form to Karlene Hoo (karlene.hoo@ttu.edu).
Registration will be accepted as a first-in-first-serve basis as received through
email. Conference
Personnel Professor
Karlene A. Hoo of Texas Tech University will chair the workshop. Professors Jay
Farrell (University of California, Riverside) and John Chiasson (Boise State University)
will serve as advisors to the Chair. Discussions resulting from the breakout sessions
will be recorded and published. Benefits
of the Workshop CDI
is NSF's bold five-year initiative to "create revolutionary science and engineering"
research outcomes at an investment level of $26M in FY08. While many of us are
involved in broad interdisciplinary research activities, this workshop is aimed
at focusing those activities that fit well with the CDI initiative. By attending
the workshop, potential principal investigators will have a deeper understanding
of the scope of the CDI initiative especially on developments in "computational
thinking". Moreover, as a group we will have a chance to provide feedback
to NSF regarding how we can add values to the CDI initiative.
