Dennis S. Bernstein receive the Sc.B. in applied mathematics from Brown University in 1977 and the Ph.D. in Computer, Information, and Control Engineering (CICE) from the University of Michigan in 1982. He was employed by Lincoln Laboratory (1982-84), Harris Corporation (1984-91) and the University of Michigan (1991-present), where he is a professor in the Aerospace Engineering Department. His teaching and research interests include all aspects of identification, estimation, and control for aerospace systems. His research has been supported by AFOSR, NASA, ONR, and NSF, and he has supervised 45 Ph.D. graduates. He has published over 300 journal papers and 500 conference papers. His book Scalar, Vector, and Matrix Mathematics, published by Princeton University Press, appeared in its third edition in 2018. In addition to technical research, he has published numerous tutorial and expository papers in the IEEE Control Systems Magazine on a wide range of topics relevant to control engineering and control education. He was the Editor-in- Chief of IEEE CSM from 2003 to 2011.
